GERARD PIETER ADOLFS
1897 – 1968
Biography
Gerard Pieter Adolfs (1897–1968) was a Dutch painter celebrated for his vibrant depictions of life in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Born in Semarang, Java, he initially trained as an architect in Amsterdam but later devoted himself to painting.
Known for his expressive, impressionistic style, Adolfs captured Indonesia’s landscapes, urban life, and traditions with dynamic compositions and rich use of light and color. Though he traveled widely across Europe and Asia, his deep connection to Indonesia remained central to his work, offering a vivid glimpse into early 20th-century life in the archipelago.
