QI BAISHI
1864 – 1957
Biography
Qi Baishi (1863–1957) was one of the last great masters of traditional Chinese painting. Born in Xiangtan, Hunan, to a humble family, he was largely self-taught in poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Throughout his long career, Qi developed a distinctive style that combined bold brushwork, vibrant color, and a deep affection for nature’s simple forms. As head of the Beijing Institute of Chinese Painting, he left a legacy of works celebrated for their vitality and honesty. In 1955, he was awarded the International Peace Award in recognition of his cultural contributions.
