CHEN WEN HSI
1906 – 1991
Biography
Born in China, Chen Wen Hsi (1906–1991) settled in Singapore in 1949 and played a key role in developing the Nanyang Style. As a lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in the 1950s, he influenced generations of artists and became a leading figure in Singapore’s art scene.
A passionate observer of nature, Chen is best known for his paintings of gibbons and animals, influenced by the Lingnan style. While primarily a Chinese brush painter, he also explored Cubism, incorporating geometric elements into his compositions.
Recognized as the doyen of Singapore’s Chinese brush painting, Chen’s legacy continues to shape Southeast Asian art.
