UMI DACHLAN
1942 – 2009
Biography
A key figure in the Bandung School of painting, Umi Dachlan is known for her textured abstract canvases, often featuring rich layers of maroon and gold. Her work, deeply rooted in Islamic philosophy, reflects a spiritual connection to nature and music.
Umi Dachlan studied at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) under Ahmad Sadali, a leading figure in modern Islamic art in Indonesia. In 1968, she became only the third female artist to graduate from ITB and, in 1969, its first female lecturer, breaking barriers during Indonesia’s post-independence era.
