    Umi Dachlan

    1942 – 2009

A key figure in the Bandung School of painting, Umi Dachlan was renowned for her textured abstract canvases, often layered in deep maroon, gold, and her signature purple. Rooted in Islamic philosophy, her works reflect a spiritual connection to nature and music. She studied at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) under Ahmad Sadali, a leading figure in modern Islamic art in Indonesia, graduating in 1968 as only the third female artist to do so.

In 1969, she broke barriers by becoming ITB’s first female lecturer, teaching there until 1999. Over the years, she moved beyond her mentor’s influence to establish her own iconography, earning a place in the discourse of Indonesian abstraction alongside artists such as Mochtar Apin, Popo Iskandar, and A.D. Pirous.

Her abstraction distilled forms from nature into symbolic rather than representational elements, allowing religion and nature to become her strongest creative impulses. Through abstraction, she found the freedom to express the sensations of spiritual reflection and the beauty of the natural world.
