Heri Dono
B. 1960
Heri Dono is an acclaimed Indonesian artist and a key figure in bringing Indonesian contemporary art to the world stage in the early 1990s. A graduate of Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, Dono is best known for his multidisciplinary works, which fuse elements of Javanese wayang (shadow puppets), social criticism, and humor with multimedia.
His work often features wild deformations and freestyle fantasies inspired by wayang, cartoons, and comics, engaging audiences in a complementary dialogue. His unique blend of traditional art with contemporary themes has led to a remarkable career, including participation in over 300 exhibitions and 35 international biennials, such as the Venice Biennale (2003, 2015) and the Asia Pacific Triennial (1993, 2000). Recognized by Artlink magazine as the most internationally-invited artist from 1993-2006, Dono has received numerous awards, including the Dutch Prince Claus Award (1998) and the UNESCO Prize (2000).
