Maria Tjui
1934 – 2016
Maria Tjui (1934-2016), was an Indonesian artist known for her vibrant use of color and a style that encompassed realism, impressionism, and expressionism. Her paintings often depicted Bali's landscapes and the lives of ordinary people.
A strong advocate for women, Tjui believed that Indonesian women had great potential as painters, which often went unrealized due to social constraints. Her work is held in prestigious collections, including the National Gallery of Indonesia and by notable figures like B.J. Habibie, Tien Soeharto, and Adam Malik. She has also exhibited internationally, such as at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and was also involved in the revitalization of the Balai Budaya Jakarta.
